A secondary loft area in the eOne model offers additional living space.

Thanks to these measures, two solar panels can power the whole house, including the appliances in the island, which the couple stained using a dark wood finish from Osmo. Designed by Martín’s brother, Sebastián, the A-frame structure, where six can sleep comfortably, was built to conserve energy year-round: Doors and windows at both ends can be opened for ventilation, while a woodburning stove concentrates heat in the upstairs bedrooms.

Comprising 11 modules, this green-roofed prefab was built in 90 days in a factory near São Paulo and then transported to the site in three shipments on flatbed trucks.

A section drawing shows how the nook-like living spaces on the upper levels revolve around the central atrium. The air gaps between the envelope and the interior are as wide as 13 feet in some places. In addition to insulating the house, they conceal technical systems and provide storage space.

The bedroom is lined in spruce and sparsely furnished, save for a built-in bed designed by Ateljé Sotamaa. The coverlet and pillows feature a folkloric pattern by Klaus Haapaniemi & Co.

The kitchen is outfitted with IKEA and Bosch appliances and a custom sink and countertop by Durat.

The site is located in the Vredefort Dome near Parys, just ninety minutes from Johannesburg. The Vredefort Dome has a dramatic landscape that is characterised by complex meteorite impact structure phenomena.

The units are installed on a site in Hurley, New York, overlooking Twin Lakes, and some of them will include private hot tubs.

All the bathroom surfaces are tiled, and the vanity is designed in the Scandinavian modern manner.

Reilly identified the Santa & Cole Tekiò linear suspension light as a statement piece early in the design process; its metal frame is wrapped in Japanese washi paper. The Gaggenau induction cooktop integrated into the counter on the back wall is nearly invisible. The undercounter fridge drawer is entirely inconspicuous. “I made this as minimal as modern as I could because the last kitchen I designed was very traditional,” Reilly explains. The steel column was added for support after taking down a wall.

“I envision people writing their books, music, refuelling their creative flow,” says Castillero. He should know about its energizing power more than anyone, really: it brought him back to his love of architecture, after all. “It’s truly my new happy place.”

Before: The entry was a nice size with original detailing, but had no storage.

Karvelius gave the room floor-to-ceiling tile, and designed a new shower rod as an oak update of traditional ceiling-suspended metal rods.

The Hideout is currently available for rent on Airbnb. “Obviously you can get off the grid and go to a more traditional cabin or camping, but to have a space that’s also designed very internationally brings it to the next level of that experience,” says Castillero.
