A metal layer painted in bright orange separates the home’s lower concrete level from the upper structure, made of cross-laminated timber and clad in Dual Black IKO Cambridge shingles. On the ground floor, a terrace extends from the living area via walls of Habitat by Cebrace windows. Orange metal stilts make the trapezoidal structure look as if it’s floating.

The innagural retreat opened in 2021 on the coast of Helsinki, Finland. The project encompasses four rentable cabins that can each accommodate up to three guests.

Space saving solutions within the 235-square-foot cabins include custom furniture hacks like a fold-away dining table that conceals built-in shelving.

Each cabin is constructed around a patented autonomous sanitary-kitchen module, coupled with an energy storage system and a wastewater treatment system that together ensure the properties are able to operate off grid.

The two-level cabins contain a communal living space and a lofted bedroom.

The bathrooms include a glass-walled shower booth and a Rheem tankless water heater. The newer models feature vessel sinks and white slate tiling. Black quartz is used for the countertops across the units. The default materials can be downgraded to discount the price of the prefab.

The prefabs are built on a standard concrete pier foundation. MyCabin can design a stem wall or helical pile foundation at an additional cost if they receive a soil report for the site.

“Our primary consideration was to have a home that was comfortable and functional for the two of us,” says architect William Samuels. “That consideration outweighed all other aspects of the brief and was our only non-negotiable.”

The custom cabinetry for the bathroom is made of laminated pine board with a water-base finish that's resistant to color change and similar to what you see in the rest of the house as we wanted to create a consistent story,

The interior of the micro cabin is finished with pine plywood walls, ceiling, and floors that lend pattern and an organic quality. Stainless steel cabinetry, counters, and appliances in the kitchen offer a more industrial quality that balances the materiality of the wood.

A loft-style sleeping area above the kitchen is outfitted with a skylight that allows sunlight to stream in and help warm the tiny home. Hidden drawers in the toe-kick area add storage in the kitchen, where there's also a built-in wine rack and a dual-purpose pantry that doubles as an access ladder for the loft.
