After the 2019 Kincade wildfire destroyed one family's weekend home near Healdsburg, California, Faulkner Architects designed an resilient, durable, and energy efficient house that utilizes the existing concrete foundation and walls—the only salvageable remnants post-wildfire.

Surrounded by a wild apple orchard, the revamped 1800s residence is a slice of pastoral bliss, complete with a converted barn.

Located steps from the beach in Kent, England, the recently renovated structure has a Flemish-bond brick facade, limewashed interiors, and a striking steel staircase.

At Las Rocas, you always have two views: the lake and the rocks, which was the impetus for erasing the corners of the home. “The corner openings were a must for this project, because they really connect you to the outside,” says architect Ignacio Urquiza.

“That swoop was my least favorite thing about the house,” admits Fred. “I was looking forward to an angular, Craftsman-type thing. But I said, I’m going to trust Kristin.”

Set high in the hills above Portland, this home has a stately turret, vibrant interiors, and 200-year-old terra-cotta tile floors.

HiFAB hopes to grow their business and, eventually, pass savings onto potential homeowners to make the homes affordable for more people.

Set in the heart of the Hudson Valley, this 60-acre estate includes a three-bedroom home, a guest cottage, and a detached workshop.

Candour is a prefab building system and a tool to customize building components within that system—including walls, floors, facades, and roofs—with a proprietary CAD plug-in. Users of the software can draft a design, determine if it’s feasible, and price it all in one day. Designs are built at Candour’s manufacturing facility in Sunshine, Melbourne.

Completed in December 2023, Yandoit House was designed by Archier and prefabricated by Candour.

Located on a former dairy farm in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Victoria, Australia, the residence is part of a vegetative regeneration project. The floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the home meet the owner’s request to feel connected to the land throughout the retreat.

Yandoit House was built using Candour’s structural glazed facade system, wall panels, and exposed rafter ceiling cassettes, as well as its design software and manufacturing facility.

Designed for a couple, the one-bedroom, one-bathroom home totals 1,722 square feet with a square plan and flat roof.

Dimensions X was founded in 2020 by entrepreneur Oscar Martin and architect Peter Stutchbury to answer one question: How can prefab housing be more site-responsive? Their answer is the modular cross-laminated timber OM-1, a roughly 600-square-foot cabin where everything from its dimensions to its envelope can be optimized and adjusted to better suit its environment, and its owner.
