Woods & Water first bedroom

The sprawling residence sits nestled under soaring trees on a lush lot in Pacific Palisades.

The bathroom features custom black-and-white Carrara marble flooring.

A new kitchen island adds much-needed counter space for food prep, while a NanaWall door system connects the kitchen to the rear deck and brings in natural light.

Supporting the dramatic roofline is a central iron beam that runs diagonally across the ceiling. Near the kitchen, a stained glass window hangs over the doorway.

The home’s most dramatic feature is a central living room oriented to take advantage of northwestern views over Berkeley and toward Marin County in the distance. Along one side of the space, a glass door leads out to the surrounding patio.

Built in 1951, this midcentury home is nestled into the Berkeley Hills near Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve. The structure sits midway down a sloping lot, with a staircase providing access from the street and additional stairs connecting to verdant gardens around the home.

The kitchen is a central gathering place for the Baker family. The custom cabinetry was painted a light white color to make it feel a part of the wall.

The entry boasts built-in cabinetry to the right of the front door and 4 wall hooks—one for each family member to hang everything from jackets to backpacks.

The gloriette, a serene outdoor room above the house, was Richard Neutra’s creative way of bypassing zoning codes that forbade two-story structures.

The garden is all original plantings, including a lush olive tree and natural grasses: Dunin kept as much as she could, and added a veggie patch and fruit trees out back.

The colors for all the finishing touches were workshopped on-site, and Dunin and team pieced together their palette through experimentation… even if it meant 10 samples of grout. “We drove the builder crazy,” she laughs.

Light oak panels by Finsa clad both the kitchen cabinetry and the built-in units that appear in the living room and entryway. "We used natural materials where we could, but we were also mindful of keeping high-touch surfaces durable," explains Anne-Marie Armstrong, co-principal of AAmp Studio.

The kitchen, which was moved to the sunny side of the house, embraces Anyeley’s taste for simple, modern forms. Cabinetry painted in Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball surrounds a central island fitted with Nerd bar stools by Muuto and a Dot Line Suspension pendant by Lambert & Fils. Completing the kitchen is a Litze faucet by Brizo and a Crosstown sink by Elkay, along with rangetop and wall ovens by Dacor and a Benchmark refrigerator from Bosch.

Read chose whitened birch plywood for the kitchen floors, which match the cabinetry. An office sits on the far end of the pantry.
