Recycled timbers are used throughout the home from the curved bench to the joinery in the kitchen. The kitchen also connects to a cold-store walk-in pantry that’s cooled with an in-slab ventilation pipe funneling cool under-house air.

"It’s not uncommon for sellers to throw some new black plastic under the house to conceal any potential water problems,” says Burkholder. “Old leaky pipes are one problem, but a high water level that leaves the crawlspace musty can be an expensive fix as well.”

Concrete and timber meet again on the stairs that lead to the upper level.

The kitchen faces the back garden and benefits from a double height atrium space. Pine has been used for the kitchen flooring and cabinets, a design element that is also picked up in the stairwell. The built-in refrigerator and pantry are cleverly hidden under the first flight of stairs.

Now, the remodeled staircase features pine paneling and is painted white.

The living spaces are orientated to the north, while the bedrooms have been placed in the south of the home.
