The open-plan kitchen, dining and living room honors the home's original design and heroes the existing stone wall.

Wataru Hatano, a papermaker form Kurotani Washi, was brought in to apply Japanese paper to features such as the ceiling in the guesthouse.

The living and kitchen spaces flow together, framed by wood cabinetry, terrazzo, and abundant greenery.

Much of the original furniture remains in the home, including wooden bookshelves set into concrete room dividers. “I find the way he resolved the corners with obtuse angles quite beautiful,” writes Maria. “He used the same detail for both the table and the bookcase. The photographers were drawn to the materials in addition to the form of the furnishings. “I love all the materials inside the house, especially those that were used by Riva to create the furniture,” says Francesco Paleari, who with Allegra Martin shot the apartment for the first time in decades for the book.

“All our inspiration was France, Italy, Morocco, Greece—just not England,” says homeowner Leila D’Angelo. “We deviated quickly from the idea of a ‘renovated Victorian house’ and leaned into something much more Mediterranean, because that’s what felt authentic to us.”

The whole project comprised only three months of design, two months of production (some 90 percent of which was completed at a Buenos Aires factory), one day of assembly, and five days of adjustments. The sink was relocated to the peninsula, and an open shelf above is higher for head clearance and display opportunity. Rift-sawn red oak covers the refrigerator and adjacent pantry doors.
