An arched wooden door extends a warm invitation inside, opening up to the generous entryway that connects the home’s primary living spaces. "I love the wide magnesite staircase [in the foyer], and took real joy in restoring it," says Lenore.

New sliding glass doors provide a seamless connection to exterior living areas.

Feldman Architects opened up the living room with a smooth white plaster wall for the fireplace, and a new board-formed concrete hearth. The couch is from Design Within Reach, and the coffee table and side chair are custom.

The staircase works as a visual transition from the cozy first level to the more modern second floor. When standing downstairs, the staircase pulls away from the dark anchoring floorboards with angled steel beams, stainless steel cables, and wood caps. “It’s thin and light so that it wouldn’t impede connection to the first floor,” says Michael. “It’s meant to be pretty modern, but the wood cap softens the look a little, and makes the experience of touching the railing softer.”

Wood paneling and clerestory windows add to the authentic midcentury charm.
