A glimpse into the powder room reveals the second stained-glass windows designed and made by the homeowner’s daughter Julie and her boyfriend Zack. A short hall into the powder room houses ample storage—a top request from the homeowner.

In the entryway, stained white-oak cabinetry provides a tidy place for shoes and bags. An unexpected but delightful moment of Brooks Thomas’ Martha Armitage wallpaper adorns the ceiling. The front door is a custom design.

“We think everybody should have color in their office space,” says Maciagowski. “It’s what keeps us happy and motivated. It’s good for morale. Sometimes you’ll have it in one conference room, but we’ve applied it everywhere.”

Adair and Kopp built the booth right into the kitchen island to help make the kitchen the center of the house. “It’s purposeful programming,” says Adair. “We want to have more conversations with our kids. So even if we’re cooking, we’re still right there.” The cabinets here store snacks and art supplies.

Hess combined a John Boos butcher-block table with a piece carved by local wood sculptor Vince Skelly to create a sculptural kitchen island. "As soon as [Skelly] brought that in there, [Charlie and Todd's] little daughter hopped up on it and owned it. So, that's where she hangs out in the kitchen," says Hess.

There is more tall-ceiling space in the expanded second floor, including the master bedroom.

The new kitchen is more colorful, with a long, thin island that's ergonomically better suited to preparing meels and bringing seating closer to the cooking.

Also in the foyer, beside a wall of glass that brings light into the living/dining area, is storagefor coats, bags and shoes.

The new dining room, at the clients' request, was kept distinct from the kitchen just behind it, which also provided room for additional shelving. Architect Michael Howells co-designed the rug.

Plan B carpenters built the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves as well as the cabinetry in the kitchen at the far end of the room.

When architects Thomas Karsten and Alexandra Erhard toured the raw industrial space, they were struck by how much light streamed in, a gift bestowed by large windows and the rare presence of a private patio.

The second bathroom is awash in blue.
