Jeff climbs the hand-built ladder to the sleeping loft. Both the ladder and bench in front of the sofa were made from fallen Pacific madrone trees on the property.

Here, the cleverly planned living area may look small, but can sleep as many as four guests on two sleep sofas and a double Murphy bed on the other side of the partition.

In this living area, a built-in Murphy bed can be pulled down to create a flexible sleeping area when needed. This Murphy bed incorporates two small bedside nooks with built-in lighting.

Refugio 3x3 comprises two approximately three-meter-cubed volumes stacked together, and a three-meter-by-three-meter deck made of laurel wood salvaged from an old structure. The structure is elevated above the ground to minimize site impact.

Located in La Unión, a city and commune in Chile’s Los Ríos region, Refugio 3x3 is set in a forest on the side of a new lot of residential houses that were built in response to the recent expansion of city limits.

The Signature House was installed in Vermont, where it currently has a four-month wait (at least!) for guests to stay.

The Signature House is 227-square-feet and can be used year-round.

The all-glass exterior of these prefabs have made them popular destinations for part-time rentals online.

The Hideout lives on the same five-acre property as another guesthouse Castillero owns, The Woodlands.

This particular cabin may be done, but Castillero and Reed are just getting started. “I like the idea of working on something and tweaking and perfecting it,” says Castillero, who is now envisioning building a network for Hideouts, each iteration improving on the next to provide an even better getaway for creatives to disconnect with the world and reconnect with nature.
