For this project, the husband loved ultra-modern design, while the wife leaned towards a more traditional aesthetic. How to please both? “Through the design process, we learned that their tastes were actually more closely aligned when we focused on the desired 'feel' of the home versus specific design details,” Field says.
He and his colleagues balanced rustic, exposed ceiling beams with elegant venetian plaster walls, and artful aluminum storefront windows with functional white oak plank flooring.

The home’s materials and colors were drawn specifically from the site to help it meld into the landscape. It is a custom rammed earth house. Rammed earth is an ancient process originating in the Middle East inspired by a desire to be one with nature. It is a style and building technique that is true to the region, the foundation of the adobe construction that is popular in Santa Fe and surrounding regions. The masonry of the project makes it unique: it was carefully crafted to maximize and adapt to the varying temperatures in the region, allowing for comfortable interior temperatures.
“We started our design process with a focus on material—the goal was to create a durable, weatherproof collection that stands the test of time,” says Ben Parsa, CEO of CABA Design, who created the Chicory outdoor collection. “We instinctively knew the best outdoor timber product is teak and focused on capturing the elegance and uniqueness of the wood while also ensuring we didn’t use a one-size-fits-all approach.”
New custom walnut cabinetry syncs with the rest of the built-ins throughout the home, to create a pleasing rhythm in the open plan. The backsplash is Heath Ceramics tile, and the counter is Pental Quartz. Open shelves at the rear overlook a cozy den, and allow sightlines out the new windows at the front of the home.
