One of Mandy’s many Pandemic home-improvement projects was learning to plumb via the new mini hot tub in the backyard.

The couple took advantage of numerous municipal programs when landscaping the backyard. Mandy recently completed a free course through LADWP, who also promotes resources for the SoCal Turf Replacement Program, to become a certified California Native Plant Landscape: “There is an amazing amount of knowledge and resources for transitioning yards with more native/drought-tolerant plants through LADWP and the Theodore Payne Foundation,” says Mandy.

Additional storage hidden under the breakfast nook bench helps maximize every square inch.

The bathroom features a custom concrete sink from Caesarstone and a vanity base from Ikea accented with customized panels.

The terrace off a bedroom holds chaise longues from Design Within Reach. “When we laid out the project, the eucalyptus tree was going to go away,” says Walker. “But then we thought, if we move the foundation a little bit, we can probably save the tree.”

A locally sourced vintage barn door is mounted with hardware from Rustica.

A project splurge, twin commercial-grade windows paired with crisp white walls make the small space feel exceptionally roomy. The pendant above the dining nook is from Hay.

Site restrictions limited the structure’s footprint, so Benson found additional space by creating a loft.

The main living space has a couch from Room & Board and rugs from Dash and Albert, all in colors that reflect the rural parcel. The wood sculpture hanging on the wall is by Don Best.

Even with multiple structures across their 10-acre property in Maine, Diana Arcadipone and Scott Berk only had one bathroom. This 560-square-foot guesthouse by architect Leslie Benson gives them a second, as well as space for visiting family and friends.

A timber-framed screened porch gives guests a place to sit outside without being swarmed by mosquitos.

The loft space necessitated a railing, so Diana and Scott worked with Jay Morissette of Western Maine Steel to fabricate a custom design.

Adding storage under the new stair maximizes the kitchen's footprint. Hemlock wood on the stair was stained to complement the casework. The faucet is from Brizo and the green backsplash tile is Heath.
