Composed of two wings, the Clarté embodies the designers’ penchant for industrial materials. Each wing has its own entrance, lobby, and stairwells supported by a steel frame that incorporate glass-brick steps from French glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain.

The vaulted glass ceiling supports an original light fixture designed by Le Corbusier, made of a nickel-plated metal tube suspended from a steel crossbeam and lit using bare bulbs.

The original home was converted into a bedroom level, and given a second-story addition and roof deck. The dark exterior color, a charcoal-eggplant hue, lets the landscape colors stand out in contrast. “The existing house roof became the roof deck,” says Rogers. “And then I just shifted over the addition so that it floated over the landscape.”

The homeowners spent $125,000 refreshing the ’70s home with finishes and decor that make it feel like a beloved family retreat.

Upstairs a 300-square-foot loft houses the primary bedroom and bath.

The living area is the main showcase of the home with soaring pine ceilings, 20ft windows and a stone walled fire place.

The rear of the home had been complicated by many additions. Davis streamlined the space as one adjoining kitchen, living room, dining room, and lower sunroom.

Once dark and cloistered, this residence revamped by Jon Powell Architecture now revels in daylight, bright color, and garden views.

Regan Baker Design teamed up with contractor Markus Burkhardt and Sagan Design Group to design and build Tahoe’s first Passive House for a family of five, incorporating their vintage and heirloom quilts.

A major move was removing the long-neglected carpeting. “It was dark with rips and paint all over it,” Bradley remembers. “As soon as that was torn up, we could see the floorboards underneath, and the room felt much bigger.” White oak laminate by Mersey Flooring now runs across the space.

Before making any major moves under her parents’ roof, Mercy opened up the conversation. “I took photos of the room and rendered the color blocking to lay out my plan to my parents,” she says. “It helped transition away from asking for permission and toward asking for opinions and compromise.”

A swell of Behr’s Dark Everglade emphasizes Mercy’s bed nook while creating a subtle separation between work and play.

The wrapping of the stairs mirrors that of the slide—and allows the stairs to fit beneath the low-point of the basement ceiling. “We wanted to create a light balustrade that felt a bit like a ribbon,” says architect Trevor Wallace. “The mesh was a nice way to integrate that movement.”

The Stewart-Schafer team hand-selected each slab of Calacatta Vagli marble to be book-matched. "We love the beautiful natural veining and imperfections of marble against the clean lines of the kitchen design," noted Stucker. To protect the marble, they used a trade secret sealing product that comes with a lifetime guarantee, which, according to Stucker "helps alleviate the hesitations some clients have with marble."

This 460 square foot addition to a Cape Cod home houses adds much needed space for additional family members.

Fortunately, the damaged exterior and dismally dark 1970s interior didn’t scare away NMT Financial, who were captivated by the home wrapped around a massive oak tree embedded into the inner courtyard. Oakland-based See Arch was hired to restore the home’s modernist character while updating the dwelling to contemporary standards.
