Junipero House enjoys a privileged position combining the best of two worlds: proximity to the buzzy dining and nightlife of Canggu, and pure peace afforded by its wilderness-padded section.
The imposing entrance of the house combines elements of traditional Balinese materials like local Kerobokan stone with international influences such as Shou Sugi Ban Bankiari cladding.
The architects optimised the steep slope at the eastern end of the section by adding a subterranean level that accommodates a guest bedroom, storage and a yoga space.
Perforated loster brick partitions are interspersed with slab-like Paras Kerobokan stone walls whose density contrasts with the levity of a pillared veranda that stretches alongside a lap pool.
Junipero House is both open to the elements and protected from their unfiltered impacts. All rooms are bestowed with their own private terrace and garden views or access.
A gentle-intervention approach was taken to landscaping the garden under the skilled creative direction of landscape designer studio Florian Wild, whose owner happens to be Rod’s son.
A loster screen mediates the sun’s rays as it filters in to the living areas from the west at sunset, gently illuminating the natural teak wood that in turn balances the home’s dark palette.
Moody tones reflecting the earthy tones of Canggu continue from the exterior into the kitchen, setting a calm tone. The dining table in the foreground was made in Jepara. “Indonesian craftsmanship with wood is one of the luxuries available to us here,” says Rod.
“The freedom to build in Bali is exhilarating and addictive,” Rod says. “From the range of natural stones, timbers and hand-made finishes, to the endless patience of our construction teams, it’s a very rewarding experience.”
While the exterior facade is clad in cedar shingles, teak, and clay, the interiors feature French oak louvers, beams, and floors to further enhance the home's warmth and texture.
Set behind tall hedges and wrapped in ivy, the A-lister’s former home is a plant lover’s paradise.
