For the lower-level den, “Sean wanted something that felt really cozy,” says Alves. She and Echeverry covered the walls with Portola’s deep-green Timberline limewash and installed a built-in sofa to enclose a retreat from the rest of the open-plan house. They kept the home’s original hardwood floors, layering them with vintage Turkish rugs, and installed recessed shelving after discovering a hidden crawl space behind one of the walls.

In this Australian project, a resort-worthy swimming pool sits beside the industrial-chic kitchen and living area. It's a joy to swim in, of course, but the body of water also provides evaporative cooling for the courtyard.

Adair and Kopp commissioned the metal fabricator who did the railings to create the monkey-bar rungs that line the hallway, powder-coated in seafoam green. Rings can attach to the monkey bars to give the boys a different type of challenge.

Farrow & Ball French Gray covers the kitchen cabinetry, fabricated by Toulouse St. Millwork, walls, ceiling, and stove hood. The counters are Arabescato honed marble.
