From lighting to plumbing, here’s what you should know before you start your next update.

Sandwiched between two other red-brick properties, the revamped row home now gorgeously stands out with its crisp white facade.

New built-ins provide additional storage.

The home's furnishings and decor reflect the couple's personal style, with a blend of midcentury modern and Scandinavian-inspired pieces.

Black hex tile ground the new design. The vanity is maple with a quartz counter. Schoolhouse Electric sconces float over a CB2 mirror.

Although the home's historic front facade needed to be preserved, the back of the residence was ripe for a remodel. The architects cladded the exterior in eastern cedar. The wood is offset with large expanses of glass, as well as yellow accents to add a playful atmosphere.

The kitchen and dining area are made to feel bright and airy with minimalist decor and walls painted Sherwin Williams Origami White. The lights hanging over the island are Allied Maker's Blobe pendants.

In an effort to keep costs within budget without sacrificing looks, the fully gutted and renovated kitchen features IKEA cabinetry framework with shaker-style fronts by Semihandmade. The cabinets were painted Farrow & Ball Pigeon.

The vestibule floor was retiled with ivory and sage penny tiles, while five-inch white oak planks were put down as new flooring throughout.

The large living room doorway was preserved and frames views of the original staircase that was restored with the treads, risers and balustrades painted Benjamin Moore Black. The mahogany handrail was sanded down to its raw color and finished in a water-based clear coat.

On the back deck, West Elm chairs were placed with a Blu Dot table.

Farrow & Ball’s Hazy covers the custom millwork in this child’s room. “This is a very small room, which is typical to a lot of brownstones in Brooklyn,” says Cuttle. “You have this very narrow space and you're trying to make the most of it. So, the built-in stretches the length of that wall and gives the illusion of it being longer. Then the drapery reinforces the ceiling height.”

Yellow vinyl floor tile defines the new living room and keeps the interior from veering too industrial. “You need to offset the brick with something simple,” says Tom. “Otherwise, you get too many textures.” The lights and coffee table were found at local vintage stores.
