A small bedroom and guest toilet were sacrificed in order to create a curvacous transition from hall to kitchen area.

The largest chunk of the budget was spent on bespoke furniture and fittings as it was the best way to maximise every inch of the space and achieve the fluidity of the design scheme.

The color palette of the home is largely neutral, based on Royal Flax by Benjamin Moore. The interior of the red storage units is covered in a veneer Ettore Sottsass designed for ALPI.

The Bestor Architecture team transformed the kitchen with a more open layout finished with a green zellige tile backsplash from Clé and a lavender laminate on the island. “It’s a color combination you don’t see every day,” admits Campbell. “But playing with jewel tones and a pastel and integrating a punchier, bright color at the banquette just felt right. We liked how they were in conversation with one another.”

Colorful lamps by Michał Korchowiec occupied a basement room at the Baggio Military Hospital. The designer demonstrated how each colorful component could be removed or swapped to alter the glow.

In the process of transforming a run-down motor lodge into Hotel Wren, designer and Manola Studio founder Jessica Pell also turned the accompanying home into her own desert retreat.

Guest Bedroom Corner

Russell Brownley (a director and DP of surf films) and Brianna Brownley (a footwear designer for Reef) call Carlsbad, California home, where they live with their newborn daughter, Magnolia. When looking for the right home, they searched for a place that was unique and full of character, and immediately fell in love with this house with an open-beamed ceiling.

The space between the studio and main house is now a large patio with several seating areas. A fence encloses the space and provides additional privacy along with lush plantings.
