The outdoor dining area is connected to the new kitchen through a fine frame double glazed sliding door by Sieger Systems. This was one of the more expensive features of the renovation—the doors and triple-glazed windows throughout cost just over $27K in total—but was essential to achieve the connection the client was looking for. The studio uses Shou Sugi Ban cedar siding, white oak, and local Texas limestone. “In a sense it’s nicer than our home,” says Isaac, referring to the high-quality, natural finishes.

Patricia designed the home without a pool, a fairly common feature on the island, for ecological and spatial reasons—so an understated yet oversize sunken bath is where the family cools off during heat waves. “We really tried to find an aesthetic that ‘speaks’ of the island,” says Patricia, “that expresses how natural materials can embrace beautiful spaces and how this type of design can also be considered luxurious.”
