“I hate walking into bathrooms that feel utilitarian,” Harry says. “They should feel just as lovely as other spaces in our homes.” Here, Nagoya Mosaic-Tile Co ceramic tiles from Academy Tiles and American oak joinery give the main bathroom a luxurious feel.

Another backyard hotspot is the deck, built around an existing boulder, where adults can lounge while the kids climb.

“We’ve tried to create a space that feels calm, with warm lighting, soft textures, natural wood pieces, and beach treasures collected from our trips,” says Leah. The living room features a cozy and durable Movie Night Sectional from Sundays, Zero Waste Coffee Table from Avocado, and handcrafted shelving unit by local carpenter Kaleb Redden—putting family mementos and found objects on display.

A George Nelson pendant from Design Within Reach above the dining room table is one of the artist’s most treasured possessions. “I have a couple of original midcentury pieces and the George Nelson bubble lamp is a favorite,” she says.

Special attention was paid to the casework detail. Overlapping butt joints form a subtle herringbone pattern and exposes the plywood end-grain.

Exposed brick in the main bedroom reveals metal struts inserted by David Cunningham to tighten the party wall's attachment to the facade.

Karvelius gave the room floor-to-ceiling tile, and designed a new shower rod as an oak update of traditional ceiling-suspended metal rods.

The circle is painted with chalkboard paint. “We pin stuff up there for the holidays, like Chinese New Year, because you have to get up on a chair [to reach it] and you can’t do that everyday,” says Ren.

The central library cabinet divides the living room from the master bedroom, extending up to the mezzanine level.

A designated play area on the mezzanine level is a favorite with the couple's grandchildren.

Boyer first visited the site in 2018 for the redesign. Having grown up in the area, it was awful to see the devastating effects of the fire, but there were also signs of regrowth just a year later. “The redwoods had started to grow a little fuzzy green against the charred black [bark],” says Boyer. “It was kind-of promising. It felt hopeful that nature was coming back so quickly.”
