Inspired by their travels to Morocco, where they got married, the couple chose Moroccan clay tiles for the ground floor and spread an assortment of Moroccan rugs across the original wooden floors.

A plastered wall divides the room from the closet. Originally, the couple thought they’s only have one bedroom in the apartment, “but we are quite social,” says Jon, so they have an extra for visiting friends to stay.

The cabinets are the same patinated steel as in the kitchen, and the wood floors and built-in bed are the same pine as the living room, with a Bona Oil finish in Frost.

The built-in furniture, including the couch, low shelf, and coffee table, is all made from the same wood with the same finish so as to bland with the floors. Bespoke velvet cushions line the couch and the artwork is by Jon.

The ceramics are by Amaia. “She tries not to think about ceramics as an architect but as handcrafter, avoiding the architectural functional approach,” says Jon. “Currently she has a small vernacular studio in the countryside with an oven where she and Miren play with raw materials and techniques developing their own path.”
