In order to connect the basement to the rest of the house, the architects replaced a bedroom and bathroom on the main floor with a light-filled staircase, pantry, and powder room.

Oak lines the interior for a tactile surprise, and the marble counter echoes the marble on the island and perimeter counters.

The stone slab forms a display niche in the cabinetry, and syncs up with the materials used elsewhere in the house. The step up, and the flooring material change, designates the boundary between foyer and the rest of the home.

The addition was shifted into the trees so that it doesn’t overwhelm the site. That also gives the main living spaces a treehouse-like feel when gazing out from inside.

The kitchen features custom birch cabinetry that reflects the original material palette.

The open, 920-square-foot loft felt right to homeowners and creative couple Aubrey Ament and Will Glaser, but they needed to separate public and private spaces. A thick wall of storage did the trick.

A shelving system in the living room displays books, decor, and the couple’s vinyl collection.

The bright, open kitchen features elegant, white Calacatta Apuano honed marble countertops and a weathered, white Clé tile backsplash. The custom-made cabinets feature Schoolhouse Edgecliff pulls in natural brass.

Lalita stands in front of the coffee nook in the couple’s kitchen—one of several details that relates to their shared Brazilian heritage. Her childhood was split between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, while Fabio grew up in São Paulo before moving to various cities around the world as part of his career in advertising.

Nwankpa Gillespie added a skylight and brightened the palette with a marble shower and the same Cle zellige tiles featured in the kitchen.

“The second-floor framing is slightly pulled away from the stairs so that a sliver of sunlight can wash the stairway wall and some of the main floor below,” the architect says.

Strategically placed glass pocket doors slide open, connecting the house to its lush natural surroundings.

Inside, preserved clerestory windows usher in natural light.

Large panes of glass visually connect the indoor dining room to the covered eating area.
