The carport has been left open to allow visual connection to the water below from the road. “A lot of the other houses on the street have carports that aren’t very welcoming,” says architect Fraser Mudge. “I think maintaining that connection through the site from the street is really nice.”

Underfoot, the architects added terracotta tile that runs from inside to out, creating further continuity and grounding the home in a natural material. The cantilevered addition was kept, and another bedroom added to the second floor over the existing house. Parks collaborated with Fort Structures to ensure that the third addition would sync with the rest of the house, replicating the window placement to make them sit between the roof beams, while still meeting current code and insulating the ceiling.
