The counters are ‘Dekton Aeris’ Cosentino and the white oak cabinets from Reform.

A bench in the entry echoes the design language of the Donald Judd-inspired island, with a cushion sewn by Caroline from recycled fabric sourced at a salvage store.

A skylight was added to bring in more light, and the existing ceilings painted Benjamin Moore ‘Black Tar’ for contrast. The island pendant is the Schoolhouse Ray 17” Pendant and the stools are the Artek Aalto High Chair K65.

The factory’s dividing walls were removed, leaving a “square doughnut,” as Gabriele puts it—a continuous flow around the central landing. The renovation took just four months. “The whole thing was done with very little cost in materials and time,” he says, “but in the studio we are used to working like that.”

The kitchen is the heart of the home created by designer Gabriele Schiavon for himself and his children, Ona and Teo, in a former thermal mold factory on the outskirts of Barcelona. The renovation included the addition of a bridge-like mezzanine within the light-filled space.

Ted Power and Honora Dunham’s home sits in an area with some light industrial and commercial buildings in Long Island City, New York. A wood-burning stove from MF Fire and a West Elm couch cozy up the living room.

One renovation request, homeowner Isaac Hase says, “was having a place to drop your shoes.” At the mudroom end of a run of kitchen cabinets, you’ll find another feature the couple asked for. “We wanted to have a dedicated, visible place for our little stash of cookbooks,” Karoline says.
