ReSawn Timber Co. was also behind the white oak floors, which sits under a round Winston wood table from Rove Concept and chairs from CB2. The head farmer made the wood dining table in the background.

The "activity barn

The owners' family loves playing badminton and tennis together, and do so in a barn near the house, which also has a lounge and bar.

Built to operate completely off-grid, the house relies primarily on solar cells for energy.

Despite being unheated and uninsulated, the greenhouse is protected from rain, snow, and wind, and residents remain warm even in the coldest months.

The gourmet kitchen provides floor-to-ceiling cabinetry space.

A bright green front door extends a warm welcome to the 3,850-square-foot residence.

A double-height living room is bathed in natural light thanks to expansive windows.

The majority of the structure, including the floor and ceiling, is made of locally grown eucalyptus timber, with some external cedar cladding and steel roofing. In the living area, an Ottawa modular sofa from BoConcept provides a cozy nook for Koa, one of the couple’s two dogs.

Ian and Kate call their home Te Ngahere Hou, or “the new forest,” because of the 40-acre forest regeneration project they began when they decided to build here, establishing a covenant to protect the land.

The Lofthouse is built one of the many hills separating it from the couple’s main residence. "Excavation was a challenge, as we wanted to maintain as much of the existing landscape as possible, but needed to clear out trees for the foundation," says Tarah.
