Alternate between clawfoot tub baths and outdoor shower spritzes at this revamped Tivoli barn. Across its three levels there are such splendid details as a piano, daybed, hanging chairs, and a staircase flaunting a brass pipe railing. Do take the time, though, to wander the surrounding four acres, dotted with a stream, meditation platform, and s’mores-perfect fire pit. Days can easily be jammed with creekside jaunts, picnics on the "no-swimming" pond’s cedar table, and hammock naps.
The screen was fabricated by the contractor O’Brien Wood & Iron. "I like this treatment because it’s so dynamic," says Jocie. "It acts as a separator, but it does have some transparency and visibility with it." The existing red oak floors in this room were stripped and bleached to more closely match the new white oak stairs and floors.
Flywheel Industrial Arts fabricated and installed the floating steel and oak stair based on Herrmann’s design which balances geometry with organic rhythms. If Herrmann noticed a repeated pattern when she glanced at it, she played with the spacing until her eye wasn’t drawn to any single spot. “We were excited by the combination of a massive, steel superstructure and a non-repeating baluster pattern,” says Benjamin Cheney, a partner at the Montpelier-based firm. Bocci pendant lights illuminate the stair evenly and look beautiful.
