Floor-to-ceiling glazing encompasses the double-height living room on the upper level.

"We designed an environment that aims to be both serene and energizing—a place where our client can host lively book club get-togethers or sink into the cozy indulgence of watching a movie on her own," says senior designer Mira Eng-Goetz.

“We sandblasted, I don't know how many layers of paint off the ceiling, but we sandblasted it, and it turned out beautifully,” says Maziarski. “And then we just sealed in its natural color.”

Originally designed for the 1962 World's Fair, the condo building is flush with midcentury design details including full-height aluminum windows and parquet tile wood floors.

Kitchen

The open-plan living space is anchored by a grand dual-sided fireplace. Extensive glazing brings a strong sense of the outdoors in and keeps the interiors bright and airy.

Marble counters, custom white oak cabinetry, and terrazzo tile flooring from Ann Sacks brighten up the kitchen. "Their light tones were the right balance of Southern California modernism with the warmer, highly crafted wood carpentry that the Puget Sound region is known for," says Wittman.

Previously, the long volume of the main living area was chopped in half by a wall that enclosed the kitchen on one side. The division was a jarring way to separate the kitchen and dining room from the main living space, so the designers removed it to improve the connection between the main living areas. Removing the wall helps to expose the home’s beautiful post and beam structure throughout and unify the living spaces. To emphasize the structure, the team repainted the ceiling beams a dark color to contrast with the natural wood that was preserved.
