After: The U-shaped kitchen has MDF cabinetry and shelving, and two sinks allow the homeowners to undergo multiple tasks at once (washing vegetables, thawing frozen items, filling pots). A light well over the open shelving helps brighten the room.

“Jess is a treasure hunter at heart,” says Mattingly, noting that Jessica brought the antique metal handrail back from New York. The bottom two steps were re-poured and reshaped, framing a new alcove and drop zone with a bench. The walls covered in wood paneling.

A custom mirror and cabinet by the contractor conceals full-height storage. Jessica found the oversized concrete sink on Craigslist and Mattingly matched it in scale with the brass faucet. A ledge has leftover soapstone from the kitchen, and forms a shelf that runs into the shower.

The window wall counter is M. Teixeira Soapstone: “We needed something durable for both outdoor and indoor use,” says Mattingly. Stig stained and installed the wood counters from Home Depot, on both the sink wall and island.

The design team retained the old supports, which now frame the kitchen. Jessica picked DeVol cabinets and systems for their traditional-meets-streamlined style.

A petite en-suite bathroom was added to the guest room.

A splash of dark green paint in the sleeping nook introduces an old world drama to the space. The paint color is Billiard Green from Sherwin Williams. The crochet pendant is from World Market, and the brass bull was an eBay find. The couple's dog Waylon lounges in the pull-out dog bed drawer.

A special finish brings out the grain in the kitchen's walnut cabinetry.

Since micro-cement is waterproof, Curtis also used it to cover the shower walls, dispensing with the need for tile and the busyness of grout lines. A full-height linen shower curtain adds more texture and movement, and the plumbing is handmade of brass.

The floors are a handmade ceramic tile and the vanity is covered in micro-cement, with a stone vessel basin.
