The flooring are custom green vinyl floor tiles ($800) from Etsy shop Marzipan Days, installed over the existing floor and sealed, while the wallpaper is the exact pattern that Kara admired in Quebec City coffee shop two years ago, bought on sale from Anthropologie for $700.

After: The soaring new living and dining space benefits from an abundance of natural light from every side, and they spent a lot of time trying to find the best lighting for the kitchen. The final choice: long, narrow copper pendants from Denmark suspended by ultra thin wires to not disrupt the visual flow of the room.

A skylight was added to bring in more light, and the existing ceilings painted Benjamin Moore ‘Black Tar’ for contrast. The island pendant is the Schoolhouse Ray 17” Pendant and the stools are the Artek Aalto High Chair K65.

Before: The previous kitchen lacked a good run of counter space, since both the sink and stovetop were set in the middle of each leg.

The wet bathroom, clad in Savoy penny tile by Ann Sacks, helped optimize the home’s petite footprint.

In the kitchen, both the timber frame and cabinetry are made of Douglas fir. “We wanted to keep the material palette limited,” says architect and homeowner Sherry Scott. A ladder leads to a loft that doubles as an office and extra sleeping space. The custom sectional in the living area is by Bimma Loft.

A new clerestory window helps illuminate the bedroom. The furnishings are a medley of vintage finds and the couple’s favorites.

The structures share a solar panel, but the families control their own home's heat level with a wood-burning stove.

"I've always loved the way buildings look when they're under construction, and the walls of the office are basically like open framing," Davis says.

The dining room is surrounded by windows to take in the ocean views.

The roof was lifted and insulated during the renovation, and the original Douglas fir floors were kept and patched where needed. The oversized thermal windows also regulate the temperature.

In the kids’ bath, green hexagon tile from Heath Ceramics is a lovely backdrop for the walnut vanity.
