Architect Line Solgaard, founder of the eponymous Oslo- and Fredrikstad-based firm, designed a getaway for her family in the place where she grew up. A linear window runs under the cabinetry, its position allowing sunlight to hit the counters but avoiding looking into the neighbor’s house.

The kitchen now occupies the addition, and the island was detailed to look like a piece of furniture to better meld with the living room. The cabinet colors are Farrow & Ball’s Skimming Stone and Sherwin-Williams’s Garden Gate, and were handpainted instead of spray-finished, so as "not to have something too slick or sterile," says VW. "We wanted them to be warm and have personality."

The couple installed new wide-plank, European white oak floors throughout, which "sets the tone" throughout the entire house, says Catherine. "There’s just a graciousness to it. That small change was so transformative." The staircase tread was painted in a coat of Farrow & Ball’s Light Gray.
