Before: Edward Brooke owned this fourth-floor unit in a historic building in Old Montreal for several years before commencing a gut remodel. With only three windows on one wall, the entry was dark, with a lower ceiling than the rest of the home.

Looking in the opposite direction reveals how designer Louis Béliveau of La Firme embraced the lack of light in this part of the apartment, instead emphasizing it with ample dark finishes, like the 1x1-inch Daltile on the floor. A mirrored wall does catch some sun from the living room windows. “From a design perspective, mirrors are a magical trick,” says Béliveau. “They're not too expensive and they basically double up the space, and bounce back any lighting.” The door opens to the hall bathroom.

The ceiling and built-in storage wall in the bedroom are fabricated from American white oak, while the opposite wall and floor has the same grayish-white tone found in the rest of the apartment.

The sloped ceiling draws attention to the panoramic view outside the window of the high-rise residence.

The renovated dining area is clad with the house's original cedar panels, which were re-milled.

Storage had to be dialed in within the narrow footprint of the brownstone. The black core holds the pantry, while on the right, a bank of custom cabinetry hosts the command station, mop closet, and a concealed bar.-

Electricity needs are more than met by an array of solar panels that produces 14,423 kWh/year. “It’s a beautiful little power plant,” says Jeff.

The cooktop is by Wolf and the oven, hood, and dishwasher are by Bosch.
