The home's Canadian cedar cladding and aluminium joinery is low-maintenance, and designed to weather gently over time. The natural finish blends well with the surrounding garden, with its sculptural, desert plants. “We face south-west, so the weather comes straight at us, and the wind is loaded with salt,” says Hughes. “Fortunately, the plants we liked don’t give a hoot about the wind.”
The living area, with a sheepskin on the sofa by Sixpenny as well as another on the floor for cozy footing. On the walls, you can find relics the previous owners as well as a print of the Seven Sisters and an original charcoal portrait of Willie Nelson. Cactus photography is from the previous owners, taken during their local hikes over their decades here. String instruments line the walls along with a Taylor, ready to play within arms reach. Plants are everywhere here along with propagated cuttings. We like to get an abundant root system going before giving them to a loving home, and then we propagate a new plant!

The palette and furnishings are inspired by nature and the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. "We wanted people to feel relaxed right when they walked in, so we kept the interiors noble and focused on texture and subtleties in design," says Elaine. The living room features the Neva sofa by Sixpenny, a 19th-century Naga coffee table from India, and leather side chair from Restoration Hardware.
