The team kept the wall separating the kitchen from the ground floor bedroom intact, which is true to the original farmhouse construction.

Most materials were sourced from local hardware stores, with all of the wood siding coming from a nearby mill. The high-performance windows were a major exception, coming from Toronto, and the cabinetry, which came from Ikea.

With architecture informed by the Ancient Lakes wine region’s topography, and sightlines of the Columbia River Gorge courtesy of the sliding floor-to-ceiling doors and outdoor patio, it’s truly a high-desert respite.

Ride the ferry from Anacortes, and in less than 10 minutes you’ll arrive on petite Guemes Island and this bespoke beauty. The slanted roof, ribbed façade, and Murphy bed hiding in the office have modernist flair, unexpected for the middle of the forest. Still, the atmosphere is laidback and genial, with a wood-fired stove and glass doors that open onto a picnic table. Grab one of the bikes and explore the area’s beaches and parks, then retreat to one of the updated Adirondack chairs.

It doesn’t get more stripped-down than Schoolhouse’s folded metal shelf with brass hardware. Use it to replace clunkier shelving and clear out some kitchen clutter.

A family’s getaway in the California desert includes a spa-like main bath with a large soaking tub that connects to an outdoor shower.

Triple-glazed, frosted windows emit soft, filtered light against pale gray and blue surfaces inthe master bathroom. Lucian Field matte-glass and Lucian Mosaics penny round tiles, both by Ann Sacks, line the floor and walls.

The master bath also received a new materials palette, including tile from Mosaic House, lights from Apparatus and Workstead, and tadelakt plaster walls and ceiling, which the designers say "feel simultaneously consistent with other home elements, yet fresh and forward."

Open and inviting, the addition enables a fluid indoor-outdoor connection that didn’t exist before.
