On a rocky bank, Hebra Arquitectos builds a breezy home that opens wide to nature.

Architect couple Andreas Lyckefors and Josefine Wikholm took an unusual approach to designing their dream home. While living in a small apartment with three young children, they bought a site in Askim, a popular suburb close to Gothenburg, where they designed a pair of mirrored residences under a single gable roof.

The home is a study in how to receive light throughout the day—from sunrise to sunset. The master bedroom’s windows frame the sunrise and welcome in morning light.

The home consists of three cottage-inspired forms that are connected by a more contemporary, flat-roofed central structure. “One of the main challenges was how to bring the competing aesthetics the clients desired—they sought a simple, historical vernacular architecture with a more contemporary aesthetic,” says architect Matthew Erickson.

Bilbao-based BABELstudio and Bonadona Arquitectura completed the reconstruction of an abandoned 19th-century farmhouse and its outbuildings, which had fallen into disrepair.

The home sits at the end of a quiet, gravel road just 325-yards from the ocean. A board-formed concrete wall along the entry path hints at what is indoors.

During: The building cleaned of vegetation. “Obviously the original roof was gone completely,” says Tom. “So, we deliberated about how to treat that, how to express putting that back.”

Overhead is a steel mezzanine where Caspar works.

"The home noses out of the forest just a little bit, like it’s peeking out of the trees,” says architect Ray Calabro.

The previous home on the Park Terrace site was damaged in the earthquake and subsequently demolished. Architect Phil Redmond, director of PRau, used this project to explore an archetypal industrial form which was lost as a result of the earthquakes.

"When summer comes around, it gets progressively nestled in the forest, without ever losing views of the vineyard below," says Timothee.
