Movement on earthy surface

A keyhole doorway marks the boundary between public and private sides of the house.

A few steps down is the formal dining room, which easily accommodates a table for eight. Original concrete tile floors run throughout the main living areas.

The plan allows light to flow from one area of the house to another. It also provides views from the entryway to the back of the home.

"Often, architects tend to think that if they use a lot of expensive materials such as marble, they make a good design. I also like to work with nice natural materials but mostly I have to deal with limited budgets. So we first consider a good functioning design in the existing interior. Afterward, we see what materials we can add to give a certain character to the project within the budget of the client. But bespoke furniture never comes cheap. In this case, for example, we used the 3mm thick peg-board, glued on black MDF and then painted it."

The shower room and WC on the lower ground floor is accessed via the utility room, which also features counters by Smile Plastics.

Signorino wall tiles in opal white meet Lapege’s Colombino RB36 porcelain floor tiles.

The contractor installed the walnut trim, shelving, and cabinets sides and backing on site.

Master Bedroom

Ten minutes from British Columbia’s prized Whistler and Blackcomb ski areas, this house is located on a small lot atop a hill. Embracing a vertical layout, the upper level is where the open living area, complete with sectional, wood-burning stove, marble island, and spacious dining table, is found. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the forest views are especially heady.
