The dining room’s preserved built-ins are another great display space.

The overhead windows cast light and shadows above the kitchen, which is lined in lower drawers for easy access.

The overall home is constructed with larch timber, a British wood, and features a central ridge beam that gives it a butterfly-shaped roof. Shou sugi ban was done on the wood to give it a charred finish.

Now, there’s enough room for a dedicated living and dining area, comfortably separated by a walkway out to the sliding glass doors and deck. The flooring is wide-plank pine, which will accrue a nice patina over time.

At the rear of the new addition, large folding glass doors open the cooking and dining spaces up to the outside.

Wrapped in standing-seam aluminum metal panels, the new addition is artful and subdued. Modern yet discreet, the dark tone and slanted roof allow the addition to fade behind the original structure and roof.

Adding built-in plywood bookshelves to the living room side of the kitchen island was a logical way to add storage and display space. Anderson also built a coffee table to match, using a remnant piece of blackened steel from his office, building a plywood box, and adding caster wheels.

Before the renovation, the kitchen looked out onto the street. Alma-nac moved it to the rear extension.
