“I’m the queen of Ikea cabinets,” laughs Jade. She commissioned custom birch-veneer plywood for the doors from L.A.’s Anderson Plywood. That’s where people touch and feel it,” she says. “It’s important to me that it feels significant.” Here, pulls and knobs come from Mockett. The countertop is a man-made resin from Arizona Tiles in La Quinta.

Matière Première Architecture emphasized an ecological approach in renovating this formerly neglected A-frame cabin.

The Mission Revival style church is 100 percent limestone and offers a dramatic entryway leading to the front doors of each of the four loft units.

The kitchen grew by about a third, and is covered in terrazzo floor tile from Concrete Collaborative. The cabinets are Ultracraft in Rift Cut White Oak, topped with Caesarstone Quartz in Fresh Concrete. The pendant lights are from Ferm Living and are the Brass Low Socket with Tall Opal Shade.

The river is just a few steps away. CB2 chairs sit with the firepit.

The 5.7-acre lot includes a 50-foot Johnston Vidal lap pool and an open-air movie pavilion is outfitted with a wind screen and catering kitchen.

The desk and bedroom are complete with dark wood paneling that distinguishes it from the brighter living area.

The large blue barn door, mimicked by the garage doors, is an hommage to the family home, which also has big sliding storm doors.

Constructed out of structural insulated panels (SIPS), the Element House is a modular building that was designed to operate independently of public utilities by instead employing passive systems and on-site energy generation. The house functions as a guesthouse and visitor center for Star Axis, a nearby land art project by the artist Charles Ross in New Mexico.

The floor tile is the Trident Hex Blanco Encaustic by Merola Tile from Home Depot, and the wall tile is a dimensional subway tile by Artmore from Lowe’s. The rectangular tub is the Aqua Eden Jenny by Kingston Brass from Home Depot.

To reflect light around the room, Alper chose to use two shades of white in this space. The warmer of the two, Cotton Balls, was used on the walls.

In the kitchen, copper-colored stainless steel tiles from TileBar create a glowing backsplash that is offset by the neutral white cabinets. The cabinetry is by IKEA, the countertop is Caesarstone, and the induction cooktop is by Bosch.

Over 1,700 square feet of steel decking wraps around the elevated home.

Large windows, doors, and a skylight flood the guesthouse and studio with plenty of sunlight.
