"My goal was to carry on the client’s family legacy by creating a very special place that took inspiration from the landscape,” explains architect Tom Kundig.

In the master bathroom, the Smiths worked with a Boston-based company, Artaic, on the mosaic tile.

In the master bedroom, a small, cramped closet was replaced with a wardrobe that is partially obscured by a slatted wooden screen that was built by Metalworks & Design Studio of Seattle. "The idea was you see through it, so in a sense it doesn't feel like a small space," Smith says.

The renovated attic is oriented around a central volume that houses the bathroom. The wooden shelves were fashioned from hemlock planks that were salvaged during the demolition of the roof structure.

The original brick walls were preserved and painted white.

The team leveled the floors and brought the stairs up to code. A NextGen-Fyre wood stove by Lopi feels much more appropriate for the room’s proportions.

The primary bath includes double sinks, a freestanding tub with jets, and a walk-in rain shower.

The principal bedroom features a woodburning fireplace and hand-hewn ceiling beams scouted from a Pennsylvania barn.

Hope power-washed the cabin's exterior, giving it an entirely new appearance.
