“Barbecue season never ends,” says Liz, explaining how they live with such a small kitchenette. “We even made a cake out there.”
Bellomo Architects’ modular House Arc, which was just a prototype before, is now being fabricated. The House Arc can be ordered online and shipped to any location, where it can be assembled by the user or community.
Mono in the woods of Montana
The Moliving cabins are prefabricated steel structures insulated with spray foam and clad in composite wood panels.
The desk and bedroom are complete with dark wood paneling that distinguishes it from the brighter living area.
The husband-and-wife duo gave the 500-square-foot space a complete overhaul, from rewiring electricity to refinishing the wood flooring.
“We kept the existing layout, but removed original cabinets above the peninsula of the kitchen to create a more open, airy space,” Lyndsay says.
“Design choices, such as heavy bar stools in the kitchen, were made to ensure the boat could function well docked or at sea,” Lyndsay says.
Contrasting wood finishes are visible throughout the house. The stair wall, for example, is smooth-sawn Douglas fir with a lacquer finish. Above touching height it transitions back to rough-sawn material.
A gravel path leads to a bench meant for slipping off one’s shoes before entering. The slatted screen above the firewood holder helps protect the north façade from snow.
Douglas fir boards follow the angle of the roof, exaggerating the cabin’s form.
Fires can be built on either the north or south side of the rock, depending on prevailing winds.
The bench extends beyond French doors onto a deck, blurring the line between outside and in.
The desk window is positioned downwards to frame the field.
The home is nestled in a stand of cedar, pine, and Douglas fir trees. The family relocated a smaller cabin to make room for their new retreat, and they plan to convert the original structure into a game room for the kids.
The concrete form perfectly frames the spectacular surroundings while allowing for natural ventilation and illumination.
