“I love how the natural light works with the tall curved ceiling of the front bedroom upstairs,” says architect Aniket Shahane. “On a cloudy day, it lights the entire room softly and evenly; on a sunny day, a ray of light adds some drama. It makes the room feel much bigger than it is.”

The master bedroom also features a bay window, which gives architectural interest to the room, while built-in joinery—including bookshelves, drawers, a wardrobe, and a desk—makes the most of the relatively compact space.

Rather than use large panes of glass to open the house to the view, Louis suggested stacking rows of more conventional windows to save on cost and make cleaning easier.  The cladding is tongue-and-groove cypress.

Using exclusively native plants, landscape designer Karin Ursula Edmondson created a layered garden of creeping sedges, ornamental grasses, bee balm, mountain mint, shrubby St. John’s wort, fragrant sumac, and more. “The eco-system of the site was so spectacular, it was all I needed for inspiration,” she says.
