A sink and mirror in the hallway cleverly creates the extra utility needed in a family home without the expense or spatial requirements of adding an extra bathroom.

“I love how the natural light works with the tall curved ceiling of the front bedroom upstairs,” says architect Aniket Shahane. “On a cloudy day, it lights the entire room softly and evenly; on a sunny day, a ray of light adds some drama. It makes the room feel much bigger than it is.”

The master bedroom also features a bay window, which gives architectural interest to the room, while built-in joinery—including bookshelves, drawers, a wardrobe, and a desk—makes the most of the relatively compact space.

The first of two full bathrooms features a skylight over the tub and vanity, both of which are clad in a mosaic of blue tile. An original set of cabinetry provides additional storage in the corner.

The deck is framed as an open-air room where the ceiling and walls have been peeled away. The grill is a vintage Weber Genesis 1000. LG solar panels from Pick My Solar contribute to the home’s net-zero energy profile, as does a moisture barrier in the walls that allows heat to escape.

Rather than use large panes of glass to open the house to the view, Louis suggested stacking rows of more conventional windows to save on cost and make cleaning easier. The cladding is tongue-and-groove cypress.

A look at the principal bathroom. “A lot of new houses don’t feel like they already love their inhabitants. Being able to live in a house that my dad designed is such an amazing, warm feeling,” Lizz says.

In the bedroom, a custom tie-dyed wool blanket by Project Room lies on top of linens by Coyuchi. The large painting is by John Finneran, and the Eames chair is an heirloom from Lizz’s family. The space also features a Componibili Bio nightstand by Anna Castelli Ferrieri from Kartell, along with a “Katz Ramona, Katz Ramona, Katz Ramona” painting by John Finneran and an “Untitled” painting by Jennifer Boysen.

A freestanding wall in the living area creates a divider for the entryway while concealing mechanical systems and providing storage.

The squiggly Bacterio laminate by Ettore Sottsass on the kitchen countertops was dead stock, and the HEWI drawer pulls were diligently sourced on eBay.

The couple’s baby, Esphyr Rain Superbloom, and Eli lounge next to a MOCA mirrored bench, also by Project Room, and an off-white leather sofa. “I won’t tell you how little we paid for the couch,” Lizz says of the vintage find. The hand-painted pendant is also by Project Room while the assorted Rowena Sartin pillows are by Iko.

Throughout the home, the walls and floors feature the natural grain patterns of lacquered plywood. The Stokke Tripp Trapp chair in the dining room was Lizz’s when she was growing up in the 1980s while the two Steen Ostergaard chairs were a thrift store find, and Project Room designed the table.

A Southern California kitchen features oak timber cabinetry and quartzite countertops.

Builder Luis Miranda assembled the CNC-milled parts in 20 days. The clear facade is made of thermally bonded polycarbonate, and the tensile covering is by Desmontables.

The west-facing exterior side wall is covered with an aluminum lattice rainscreen that controls sun pouring into the full-height windows beneath.

Using exclusively native plants, landscape designer Karin Ursula Edmondson created a layered garden of creeping sedges, ornamental grasses, bee balm, mountain mint, shrubby St. John’s wort, fragrant sumac, and more. “The eco-system of the site was so spectacular, it was all I needed for inspiration,” she says.
