The rear of the garage and studio is fitted with a slatted screen, which creates unique shadows on the stairwell and inside the unit. The outdoor room also benefits from views of the lake and is anchored by a two-sided, white brick fireplace.

“An angled entry clad in white brick addresses the angle of the street and provides a place to pause before entering into the home,” says the firm.

Lauren and Brittan Ellingson, the owners of Notice Snowboards, a custom snowboard and wakesurf company in Whitefish, Montana, approached Workaday Design and builder Mindful Designs to concoct a new lake home for their family. The brief was, perhaps unsurprisingly, focused on getting the family outdoors as much as possible.

The living room looks out onto the “Queen's Necklace,” a stretch of the L.A. coastline connecting the Palisades to Palos Verdes.

“Using an inverted plan, the street-level entrance leads directly to the second floor,” writes listing agent Brian Linder.

The couple purchased the living room’s H.W. Klein chairs with the house. Another existing piece was the mezzanine’s daybed, designed by Peter Hvidt and Orlando Mølgaard Nielsen. An original floating staircase leads to the mezzanine and then up to the second floor. The open, straight-forward spaces speak to one of Christian’s guiding principles: “Simplicity is the key,” he says.

"Each site visit would result in a joyous bushwhack through the thick rhododendron forest to the back kettle ponds," Mac says. "After, we would walk out to the front meadow [to] get a sense of how to engage the house with the landscape and create a symbiotic relationship between the two."

The bathroom’s warm, natural finishes include a brass faucet and wood paneling.

The primary bathroom features brass fixtures and teak details that are accentuated by a smooth plaster finish. "The continuity of the finishes creates visual balance within the space," says Mac.

The house is designed so that all primary spaces have sweeping views of the open field.
