At one end of the house is an unconditioned space that functions like a screened-in porch. The roof trusses are made from wood from the old farmhouse, and the interiors are clad with more boards from the farmhouse, repurposed as shiplap siding. The wood stove is from Pacific Energy.

The flooring was a major new addition. While it appears to be concrete, it is actually gray cork sheeting, laid in large tiles. The material is natural, fully recyclable, soft to walk on, cool in summer, warm in winter, and is able to withstand moisture.

The vanity, shelving, and finish surrounding the rub are custom; using marine-grade hardwood Ply that has been treated with multiple layers of sealer. An additional layer of Formica veneer has been used to treat the finish around the tub and shelves.

At a 1954 midcentury home in the West hills of Portland, Penny Black Interiors deftly updated the residence with standout cabinetry, carefully-selected tile, and wallpaper galore. The renovation balanced preserving the home's innate character and updating its function for modern life.

The teak wood and handmade Danish bricks that define the exterior are used inside as well; distressed stainless steel panels by Chris French Metal sheathe one side of the upper volume. Blasen Landscape Architecture chose Peruvian feather grass to flank the entrance walkway.

A skylight was added over the dining table to further increase the amount of natural lighting. A bridge between new and old was created by using the timber from a beam that was removed where the kitchen opens to the dining area.
