A primary suite was created on the new second level, complete with a freestanding tub.

The bathroom has been entirely clad in large Fior di Bosco marble panels, creating a simple backdrop for the arrangement of plants overlooked by the tub.

"We really wanted to enhance natural lighting so the shower has a skylight in it to luminate the space during the day," Frank Lin says. The spa-like space includes concrete countertops, antique white oak cabinets, and limestone tile floors.

All three bedroom suites come with a soaking tub overlooking ocean views.

A freestanding Antonio Lupi tub defines the updated master bath, which also features an open-plan layout and a skylight by Velux.

For a bathroom in the new addition, the architects utilized the former addition's rocky foundation, complemented by zellige tile.

The design team added a skylight to the shower room, which has a ribbed glass partition and wall tile from Solistone.

The simple graphic form of the Lola Basin Sink by ABI Interiors is balanced by Minim mixers by Brodware in bold blue.

An outdoor shower was installed in the space between the home's two boxes, as an unexpected sanctuary.

The bathroom features terrazzo floor tiles—which have a similar pattern to the material used to construct the fireplace in the living room.

Matthew built the soaking tub from yellow Alaskan cedar. “There’s no finish on it, so every time the water hits it, you get this burst of cedar aroma,” says Matthew. Adds Holly: “It smells amazing.”

A “weird two-story closet” around the staircase, says Butcher, became the powder room on the first floor and a reading nook on the stair landing. The couple’s twelve-year-old suggested the forest theme, achieved with wallpaper from Murals Your Way and a log sconce from Unique Lighting Co on Etsy.

The cabinetry is painted in Behr’s “Asparagus” color, in an extra-matte, chalky finish.

The original home was clad in brick siding on the main floor walls, prompting Hale and team to incorporate brick in their redesign as an homage to the original dwelling. The color choice of the new masonry “was primarily aesthetic, to create strong contrast for the shou sugi ban siding set above the white brick walls,” says Hale.
