Before: A desk niche on one side of the fireplace fit a fair amount, but wasn’t as functional as it could have been.

The kitchen features rustic and contemporary materials, including a brick herringbone floor and antiqued brass island.

Before: The upstairs level was reorganized to have the primary suite, bedroom and bathroom, and a study. The curved wall – a result from a remodel – was shifted and straightened.

The entryway and all of the communal living areas were situated on the garden floor. Deciding to turn the basement level into a rental unit, Hurwitz and Vogel replicated what a historic townhome would look like with a parlor-level entrance—with a few changes. Recreating a traditional vestibule contrasts with the more modern living and dining room at the rear. The staircase and utilities work like a spine around which the other rooms are organized.

When the trees leaf out, the overhauled guest cabin, the couple’s “Scandinavian dream cabin in the woods,” is hidden from view from the main house, making for a private retreat.
