One renovation request, homeowner Isaac Hase says, “was having a place to drop your shoes.” At the mudroom end of a run of kitchen cabinets, you’ll find another feature the couple asked for. “We wanted to have a dedicated, visible place for our little stash of cookbooks,” Karoline says.

The new den's rebuilt fireplace is clad with the same Heath Ceramics tile as the kitchen island. Avove it is a Christopher Wrobleski rope hanging. A vintage Hans Wegner chair with Maharam leather cushions was paired with a Lawson Fenning San Rafael Paolo coffee table.

The breakfast nook's custom bench includes cushioning covered with Maharam Fabric. Its oak base matches the floors.

The stairs connecting the three levels of the house are made of concrete, with iron railing. “The are no white walls in the house; everything is either paneled in pine wood or or converted in a stucco that mimics the look of concrete,” says the architect.

The original structure was built by relatives in 1979.

Architect Erik Churchill of BLDGWORKS and his brother-in-law, contractor Bill Henry of Field Modifications, teamed up to remodel a late ’70s home outside Philadelphia for Bill, his wife, Allegra, and their sons. The house is near family, including Erik and Allegra’s parents, Tasha Stonorov and Michael Churchill. “We knew it would be a challenge,” says Allegra, “but the opportunity to be close to my parents in a place that could display Bill’s skills and Erik’s design made it irresistible.” Cedar planks wrap a new 900-square-foot extension.

In the process of transforming a run-down motor lodge into Hotel Wren, designer and Manola Studio founder Jessica Pell also turned the accompanying home into her own desert retreat.

The bunk beds were made to be as wide as possible. Hollenbeck has three kids and two dogs.

The owners asked that their primary suite be calm and neutral. A Lawson Fenning credenza sits below the TV, and the entrance to the bathroom has pocket doors.

A full-length bench extends beneath a wall of windows in the dining area, with a wet bar tucked into the corner. Custom wallpaper was used on the back wall of the bar.

A custom dining table by Godar Furniture can seat up to 12 with an extension. Its walnut base lightly contrasts the oak chairs with leather seats. In the background, a coffee bar was organized by Haven Home.
