“We didn’t take down any trees—we only made a cut to lay the foundation of the house and the pool,” says Filipe. “In autumn when it rains, dust from the red earth rises into the air, giving the wall a reddish color.”

The structure appears to hover above a stone retaining wall.

"We didn't want to put a lot of furniture out there," says Terry of the east terrace, adding that they sometimes bring the dining table outside for meals. "You can make it work with whatever you want."

The large, east-facing terrace has a hanging fireplace and ample room for seating. The space has the same proportions as the adjacent living room to blend the inside with the outside.

Throughout the home, floor-to-ceiling windows and doors frame views and allow for indoor/outdoor living.

The living and dining rooms have custom built-in cabinetry by Alula Woodworks.

Because the property slopes to the rear, the home’s eastern view is of treetops right outside. In the dining nook, Executive Armchairs by Eero Saarinen join a Warren Platner table beneath a Serge Mouille ceiling light. A patterned rug by AVO rests on the terrazzo tile floor.

The insulated glass at the front of the house was glazed on-site. “The result is far more glass and far less mullion than in a typical glass wall,” says Alter.

Julie and Chris Hill’s home in Austin is built around a pair of massive oak trees, one of which shoots through an ipe deck, past a pair of Loll deck chairs, and into a void in the overhanging roof. “The hole also allows light to penetrate deeper into the house,” notes designer Kevin Alter.

The bench Reilly made when she was a student at Rhode Island School of Design sits under industrial-style hooks in the entry.

Reilly slotted a utility room behind the kitchen to house the oven, an extra fridge, pantry cabinets, and the laundry. A Navajo rug that Reilly found at a local yard sale adds a touch of color. The countertop and backsplash are stainless steel. She found the counter stools at a local thrift shop. “I scour every secondhand shop and go to ever yard sale in the Hamptons,” she says. “Each piece is the result of weeks of searching.”

Reilly identified the Santa & Cole Tekiò linear suspension light as a statement piece early in the design process; its metal frame is wrapped in Japanese washi paper. The Gaggenau induction cooktop integrated into the counter on the back wall is nearly invisible. The undercounter fridge drawer is entirely inconspicuous. “I made this as minimal as modern as I could because the last kitchen I designed was very traditional,” Reilly explains. The steel column was added for support after taking down a wall.

In the primary bath, the vanity countertop and integrated sink is done in the same micro-topping material as the room’s walls and floors.

The wedge-shaped shower in the primary bathroom glimmers with sunlight from a full-height window. The tiles are from SomerTile, and the fixtures are from Grohe.

In the kitchen, an 11-foot island is topped with Carrara marble and lined with Molar Stools from Blackman Cruz. All of the casework was done by Pacassa Studios.
