The stair’s wavy wood detail also influenced the scalloped ceilings in the kitchen and dining room.

With the renovation, Amanda and architect Murray Legge were inspired by many of the home's original historic details, including the scalloped wood design around the stairs and the color of the tilework at the fireplace.

The home features a mix of sourced vintage and new lighting fixtures.

The new dining room, at the clients' request, was kept distinct from the kitchen just behind it, which also provided room for additional shelving. Architect Michael Howells co-designed the rug.

Smaller square tile in matte white from Home Depot references what was there before, and the oak and quartz vanity echoes the kitchen cabinet treatment.

In an effort to keep costs within budget without sacrificing looks, the fully gutted and renovated kitchen features IKEA cabinetry framework with shaker-style fronts by Semihandmade. The cabinets were painted Farrow & Ball Pigeon.

The updated master bedroom includes new crown molding. The former closet was removed where the left nightstand is now located; the closet door was reused for the family room on the ground floor.

Of the $11,300 spent on the doors and windows in the main house, $6,000 was dedicated to the large sliding glass door on the second floor, which opens the living spaces to a bright, welcoming patio.

Shin Shin Architecture added a new level that holds the kitchen/dining/living area for the main residence.

Expansive glazing stretches across the main living areas, inviting ample natural light inside.

Herringbone brick floors continue into the primary suite located off the living room. In addition to featuring a spa-like bath, the suite also provides direct access to the backyard.

A glass wall spans across the main living areas, framing striking views of the pool and city skyline beyond. Floor-to-ceiling doors enhances the home's overall sense of space.

“In the bathrooms we worked with a local Mexican artist who specializes in the ancient art of Tadelakt, a waterproof plaster used for centuries in Morocco and European bath houses,” explains Santa Ana. The mottled finish of the plaster expresses the artistry of the material and its craftsperson.

“We designed and built a custom floating desk, just in time for the work-from-home, COVID lifestyle,” says Santa Ana. “Sylvia loves working from the second floor loft office,” where she looks out onto the landscape and a large Tipu tree.

The couple chose polished concrete throughout the home to contrast alongside more textural timber. The concrete has thermal heating below it to stay warm in the winter.
