Spread, a group founded by Haruna Yamada and Hirokasu Kobayashi, occupies their space in the factory with a lively installation of coated Steel plates in various colors. The piece is meant to embody peace, love, and joy, and it brings delightful energy to a room currently sprinkled with graffiti.

Inside, you’re greeted by a lovely minimalist collaboration between Contem and designer Nick Ross, both Stockholm-based. The works are reminiscent of Donald Judd but in some ways more sustainable. All of the pieces have been constructed from large branches of historic Linden trees on Kungshatt Island. The trees from which the wood has been sourced remain otherwise intact.

The shoe is meant to expose a wider audience to Wright’s message that design can support a more fair and just society.

Inspired by a primitive tent, this A-frame cabin is a simple one-bedroom retreat nestled in the New Zealand rain forest.

Where the roof meets the ground, the dramatic pitch serves a practical purpose: Local sheep have a habit of climbing on top of homes with sod roofs and then getting stuck, but if the angle is severe enough, they’re deterred from even trying.

Cabin ANNA began in 2016 as a way for Caspar Schols and his family to cope with a personal tragedy. At his mother’s request, he built a refuge on her rural forested property where the family “would feel connected and feel one,” says Schols. “I started dreaming of how we could be surrounded by life instead of shielded from it.” In ten months, the once physicist completed the Garden House: a prototype of what would, to his own surprise, turn into a much larger project oriented toward a deeper connection with the planet.

Instead of a kitchen island, an ovoid dining table provides definition between the kitchen and the living room. The dining table is from Bontempo and the overhead pendants are by DePadova.

Birdsall and Atticus are seated on an ipe bench designed by Anna Boeschenstein; the stucco exterior cladding was matched to Cast Iron 6202 paint by Sherwin-Williams.

The landscape design, by Anna Boeschenstein of Grounded, followed a 2,200-square-foot extension by Formwork architects Robert and Cecilia H. Nichols. The front door is painted in Chinese Red by Sherwin-Williams.

The home went through an 18-month renovation period.

The sunken lounge was designed with "slowing down and appreciating the environment" in mind. A custom-made, built-in sofa wraps around the space, bleeding into the stairs and a custom wood display shelf. Not having a TV was an intentional choice. "We wanted the client to be able to lie back and watch the clouds and the sky, to have conversations, to read a book, to play with their pets," says Knights.

Eivind did most of the construction himself, but he did have some help from his friends: While hosting a party at the not-quite-finished house on New Year’s Eve in 2016, Eivind cajoled the group into carrying the kitchen’s 11-foot concrete countertop in from the garage so that he could install it. “They had to,” he says. “Otherwise, there was no place to prepare the food.”

While much of the original design is still intact, the home recently underwent a thoughtful restoration by its current owners, and now features a new front deck and stairway, as well as numerous kitchen upgrades and low-maintenance landscaping spanning the property.
