In the dining area, Mantis chairs by Les Ateliers Courbet and a banquette upholstered in Holly Hunt fabric surround a live-edge maple table by Camilla House. The custom pendant is by Lambert & Fils and the Pivot sconces are by Apparatus.

The appliances are by Miele and the Cojo stools are by Thomas Hayes.

Clever arrangements of furniture delineate the spaces in the loft’s open floor plan. In the living area, a hand-knitted Donna Wilson Motley ottoman sits opposite a B&B Italia Charles sofa and Arco lamp.

The couple designed the oak built-ins to tuck under the existing high windows, making sure the new wood tones meld with the existing wood on the floor and ceiling.

In the kitchen, the couple kept the original cabinets and "beautiful, custom-rolled stainless-steel counters,” says Christine. They updated the island counter, flooring, and backsplash, adding Foro marble, Concrete Collaborative tiles, and Cle tile, respectively.

The double-height wall of windows in the living room looks out on the property and was a big draw on their first walk-through.

“The house has all the makings of a home, but it’s also an artistic expression and statement,” says Justine.

At the taller end of the 2,575-square-foot house, a second story holds two bedrooms, one of which Justine uses as a music room and office.

A spiral staircase leads to another spacious living area on the lower level, complete with custom wood paneling and direct outdoor access.

Tucked away off the foyer is a spacious, sunken living room, complete with beamed ceilings and large windows overlooking the backyard.

Adamant about floor-to-ceiling windows but reeling from sticker shock, Chau tapped local fabricators Arnold Iron Works and Strong Tempering Glass to create custom glazing, which proved much more affordable. The glass is reflective on the street side, creating a mirror effect.

The guest bedroom on the lower level includes a full bath. The primary suite is located upstairs and offers direct access to a large terrace overlooking the pool and backyard.

Concreteworks countertops, a Wolf range, Kallista sink, and Boffi faucet also fill the space.

The playful, color-blocked Kardiel sideboard separates the dining and living areas.

The 800-square-foot cabins in Pioneertown, California, near Joshua Tree, designed by Duane Smith of Palm Springs-based Hundred Mile House are sided with vertical tongue-and-groove pine.
