The living room has a pavilion-like feel, featuring a grand piano, upholstered sectional, Eames lounge chair and ottoman, and Isamu Noguchi coffee table, but no visible television.

Built in 1951, this well-preserved home is nestled on nearly 10 acres next to Chabot Park.

A double-sided fireplace shared with the living room warms the deck on cool evenings. Bob sited the house and strategically placed windows to take advantage of shade in summer and solar gain in winter. The outdoor seating is from IKEA.

A General Electric stereo cabinet and a 1950s chair are among the vintage pieces in the living room.

Influenced by Southern California’s Case Study House program, designer Bob Butler conceived a luminous residence and guest house on a sloping lot in Nashville that originally held a red-brick ranch-style duplex. Western red cedar lines the walkway from the carport to the entrance. The Globe lights are from West Elm.

The ground pool level of the house features a game room, entertaining area, wet bar, and gym for the young family of five.

“The fact that Kolbe had the VistaLuxe AL LINE with the aluminum interior and exterior was a big driver,” said Sara. The finished aluminum requires very little maintenance. The frames’ insulated thermal barrier and dual-glazed Low-E glass enhance condensation resistance and energy performance in the hot summers and cold winters.

An expansive deck overlooking the forested backyard further extends the gathering spaces.

Tucked beneath a grassy roof covered by nearly 200 species of plants and grasses, the structure is virtually invisible from the nearby street. In fact, the 1,400-square-foot house is so well hidden in the earth that it doesn’t seem to register on the radar of local wildlife either. Birds, butterflies, bees, dragonflies, hawks, snakes, lizards, and frogs all treat the house like just another grassy knoll.

This bedroom also connects to the deck on the first floor.

Throughout the home, wooden built-ins provide ample storage space.

One of the upstairs bedrooms features a connected “sitting area” that con be used as an en suite office space.
