Architect Tamira Sawatzky and artist Elle Flanders get an awfully good view of their busy Toronto street from their office and dining room.

This one-acre property includes a metal-and-glass garage and a skylit home with a soapstone fireplace and a Japanese soaking tub.

The house floats out over the hillside, minimizing its impact on the landscape, while taking advantage of surrounding views. The design, which places the primary living spaces on the upper floor, leaves flexibility to add an additional bedroom underneath in the future.

The eye-catching metallic blue staircase was produced by Joe Faller Fabrications.

"We wanted it to be precision made with industrial materials, but to have an etherial iridescence that was soft to the touch. Through a long process of research and development with the fabricators, we created a finish that would do just this," says Ulanowski.

“Where we let loose was on the window,” Matt says. “It’s an aluminium window frame, which is bushfire compliant and easy to install, but the way that we detailed it was about hiding the frame so that the eye is drawn into the space.”
