Adair and Kopp built the booth right into the kitchen island to help make the kitchen the center of the house. “It’s purposeful programming,” says Adair. “We want to have more conversations with our kids. So even if we’re cooking, we’re still right there.” The cabinets here store snacks and art supplies.

The house is oriented north-south, with the broad side of the structure facing east-west. This guarantees not only gorgeous views of the sunset, but also minimizes wind exposure.

The flooring switches from warm, engineered white oak in the living room to concrete in the kitchen to make cleaning a breeze.

The custom-built tree fort-inspired bunk bed provides lofted space for the small room with the ladder doubling as structural support and an element of play.

The shape and orientation of the extension prevents snow from piling up on the south-facing outdoor terrace.

A poured concrete patio sits between the two buildings. “I wanted to include those expressed 'joint' lines as part of the design, so our very clever landscaper put a shallow cut along the concrete once it had cured,” says Murphy.

A second building serves as Murphy’s office, and it’s connected to the main residence by a custom metal trellis.
